About Me:

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Iowa State University, and I am also a member of the Human-Computer Interaction graduate program. I completed my graduate work in psychology at UC Santa Barbara, and later spent 3 years as a postdoc at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.

Research Interests:

My primary research areas are navigation and spatial memory. I am interested in how people remember new places and find their way to familiar places. Sometimes people use maps or other navigational aids, and other times they use their spatial memories. I am also interested in why some people are so good at finding their way, and never seem to get lost, while others get disoriented easily.

Experiments in my lab often make use of virtual reality (VR) to create unique and well-controlled experimental settings. For example, one project in our lab focuses on the role of environmental shape in navigation. Using VR, we can readily create circular rooms, trapezoidal rooms, rooms with and without landmarks, and even rooms that change shape over time.
