African and African American Studies and Psychology

The Psychology Department and the African American Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at Iowa State University invite applications for the position of assistant or associate professor. Although this is a multidisciplinary search (Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Psychology, and Sociology), the department hopes that the position will be filled by a psychologist, in which case the appointment would be in both African and African American Studies and the Department of Psychology.  The Department of Psychology has three graduate training areas:  counseling psychology, social psychology, and cognitive psychology.  The successful candidate would affiliate with one or more of these areas and with the African and African American Studies program.

A new faculty member in the Psychology Department and African American Studies Program will sustain an active program of scholarship in his or her area of specialization and teach courses and mentor students in both the program and the department. Applicants must have expertise in African American Studies and demonstrate potential for mentoring African American students.  The successful psychology candidate will have a Ph.D. in psychology by the beginning date for the appointment (August 16, 2010), and demonstrate the potential to achieve excellence in scholarship and teaching.  The African & African American Studies program is one of four ethnic studies programs in the College's Center for American Intercultural Studies (with American Indian Studies, U.S. Latino/a Studies, and Asian American Studies).
