Along with colleagues at the University of
California, San Diego, we are working on a series of lab and field studies that
are examining and (hopefully) reducing ultraviolet light (UV) exposure and
increasing UV protection in high-risk adults (e.g., highway workers, beachgoers,
college tanners). We are using a novel intervention that makes the negative appearance
consequences of UV exposure more salient via UV photography. We are also
examining mediational (cognitive) processes that contribute to the adoption of
sun protection behaviors – tanning willingness; perceived vulnerability; and tanner
images.
