Becoming an undergraduate researcher
in the HBRP can help you gain many valuable experiences that will help you
learn more about the field of psychology. You will learn about and participate
in the research process. In addition to course credit, students in Psych 491
have the opportunity to work closely with graduate students and faculty.
Your experiences might include:
- Experimental research: preparing and running
experiments.
- Recruitment of research participants.
- Administering mass testing to the undergraduate
participant pool.
- Library research and literature searches.
- Data entry and management.
- Computer work (word processing, use of
statistical packages).
- Preparation of questionnaires and survey
instruments.
- Preparation of APA style bibliographies.
Who is eligible?
Individuals considering graduate
school are particularly encouraged to consider working with the Health and
Behavior Research Project.
If you are interested in taking
Psych 491, you must
- have completed or be currently enrolled in Psych
301,
- be a Junior,
- and have a GPA of at least 2.50.
Grading System:
Your grade is based on five
factors.
- Completion of your credit hour commitment.
- Demonstration of responsibility and reliability
in performing research tasks.
- Flexibility and openness in accepting new
projects and assignments.
- Taking initiative and seeking opportunities to
learn new tasks and skills.
- Attend lab meetings.
Credit Hour Commitment:
Students must work three hours
per week for each credit hour they have signed up for. Three credit hours
translates into a nine hour commitment per week for a total of 121 hours per
semester (two credit hours requires six hours a week for a total of 81 hours).
