Chapter Summary

The history of video games, their evolving content, youth access and exposure to violent video games are briefly summarized. Theoretical work suggesting that violent video games may influence aggression and aggression-related variables is described. This is followed by a summary of a recently published meta-analysis on violent video games and an updated meta-analysis of the violent video game research literature. The new meta-analysis reveals that even if one includes only studies using minor youth, there is considerable evidence that exposure to violent video games increases aggressive behavior, and aggressive thoughts, and this it decreases prosocial behavior. Discussion focuses on methodological issues, the potential of cumulative effects of repeated exposure, and on new research directions.
