Course Content

The primary goal of this course is to provide an introduction to the research, theory and methods of health psychology. We will address the contributions of the field to our understanding of the antecedents of health, illness and related dysfunctions, the determinants of health promotion and maintenance, the prevention and treatment of illness, and to the psychology of major health problems.

Prerequisites

Junior standing and 6 hours of psychology

Grading

Grades will be based on two examinations, a research project, a literature review, and a comprehensive final:

Exams 1 & 2 20% each
Research paper 25%
Research project 10%
Final exam 25%

Research Paper

The paper (maximum 10 pages) can be a review of the literature on one of the following kinds of topics:

a) the psychological aspects of a specific disease or disorder (e.g., arthritis, diabetes);
b) a review of a psychological phenomenon that affects health or illness behavior (e.g., psychological reactance, the illusion of unique invulnerability);
c) a review of the literature on a psychologically based treatment for a health problem (e.g., aversion training for smoking cessation).

The major requirements are that the paper cover the current research literature on the topic, be based on at least 5 recent references (i.e., since 1996), and draw conclusions about the state of knowledge in the field or directions for future research. It must be typed (double spaced in 10 or 11 point font; 1" margins), with citations and references in APA style. Because choosing an appropriate topic and covering it well is a challenging task, I will provide feedback on your paper at several points at several stages of its development. A preliminary, brief description of your topic is due September 20th. The final (more complete) description is due on October 16th, and an outline of the paper is due November 13th.

Research Project - Details later (due date is tentative).
